Coronavirus Updates: March 18, 2020

USCIS Offices Temporarily Closed to the Public

As of March 18, 2020, USCIS has suspended in-person services at its field offices, asylum offices, and Application Support Centers (ASCs) in response to COVID-19. The suspension is effective until at least April 1, 2020. Field offices will send notices to applicants and petitioners with scheduled appointments and naturalization ceremonies impacted by this closure. Those needing emergency assistance should contact the USCIS Contact Center.

President Trump Expands the Travel Ban

Per Presidential Proclamation 9996, the United States has temporarily suspended entry of individuals who were physically present in the United Kingdom and Ireland during the 14-day period preceding their entry or attempted entry. US Citizens are not subject to this proclamation, which also provides exceptions for lawful permanent residents of the United States. Exceptions include but are not limited to: foreign diplomats traveling to the United States on A or G visas and certain family members of U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents including:

  • spouses;

  • children (under the age of 21);

  • parents (provided that his/her U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident child is unmarried and under the age of 21);

  • and siblings (provided that both the sibling and the U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident are unmarried and under the age of 21).
